3 books I’ve DNF’d lately

I’ve gotten REALLY GOOD at not finishing books that aren’t making me happy. My reading time is precious and I don’t want to waste with books I’m not excited to read. Here’s three books I’ve recently given up on1:

ODY-C Vol. 1 by Matt Fraction and Christian Ward | Goodreads
What it’s about: Scifi retelling of The Odyssey, with a gender-flipped cast. Set in space!
Why I DNF’d it: I love the idea of this book, but the execution left something to be desired. Interesting art, excellent gender-bending/racebending character choices, lovely colors! But the writing/story was super confusing and stilted and not what I expected or wanted from a scifi Odyssey retelling. I DO want to see what the author and illustrator come up with next, though! I just…don’t want to read this one.

These Old Shades by Georgette Heyer | Goodreads
What it’s about: A anti-hero finds and orphan and surprise! It’s the daughter of his old enemy, or something.
Why I DNF’d it: Girls pretending to be boys who then fall in love with their (male) patron while somehow blossoming into perfect feminine beauties is just NOT my thing. I actually felt physically repulsed somewhere in the second chapter– not a good sign. However! One review says that the anti-hero has a secret heart of gold and also Leonie is supposedly strong-willed? I do like those kinds of things. Maybe I’ll be more open to the storyline a few years from now.

Have you DNF’d any books lately? I hate to do it, but I also hate pushing through books I’m not enjoying. I’d rather spend my time on books I love, you know?
